A Guide to Navigating Entomology with Dyspraxia

Entomology presents unique challenges for those of us who are dyspraxic, but I've found several approaches that help significantly. This is just what has worked for me, I don't expect this to be universally applicable, but I hope it can help someone out there:

Identifying Insects

Visual memory is incredibly effective for identification. Instead of struggling repeatedly with checklists or complex keys, doable, but challenging, I prefer directly studying plates or actual specimens. Memorizing critical features visually simplifies identification dramatically. Working through comprehensive pages with all related taxonomic details helps immensely. Understanding how specific traits, like the absence of setae on Tarsus II in certain spiders, connect with other characteristics like geographic range allows me to build a comprehensive understanding that suits my thinking.

Handling Character Descriptions

Written morphological descriptions can be very challenging. If uncertain, I send clear photographs to experts for confirmation. For example, I recently verified a mite pharynx resembling a stylet by consulting experts. After confirmation, I integrate these validated images directly into my notes for future reference.

For written descriptions, I make a checklist of features I need to confirm, then cross-reference each item visually with the specimen image. Over time, this process creates a mental map of the specimen, simplifying future identification.

Handling Chaetotaxy

Chaetotaxy, the arrangement of bristles and hairs, can feel particularly daunting. Simplifying this complexity by creating visual maps alongside the actual specimen significantly helps in identifying essential features.


Managing Specimen Preparation

Pinning: I generally avoid pinning larger specimens unless securely stabilized by other means like additional pins or careful finger placement. Point mounting is far more manageable, whereas minuten mounting is particularly difficult and best minimized.


Slide Mounting: Recognizing the distinction between a visually perfect slide and one that is taxonomically sufficient significantly reduces stress. I first mount specimens directly onto the coverslip, which creates a smaller workspace and reduces alignment errors. Placing a paper or cardboard "target" beneath the slide aids precise positioning. To estimate the correct amount of media, I draw circles on the target or use a glass rod with a measured amount of media, ensuring adequate coverage.

Fine Forceps Work: For precision forceps work, moving very slowly is essential. Using forceps dipped in ethanol or another suitable medium helps greatly in picking up minute and delicate specimens


Field Specimen Sorting

I find it easiest to empty specimens onto a large white tray and gradually organize them into smaller trays based on major taxa. Keeping too many similar specimens together often obscures less common species, so sorting progressively works best.

Imaging and Microscopy as Compensation

Although drawing or tracing is challenging for me, I've effectively compensated through excellence in imaging and microscopy. Developing strong skills in these areas fully compensates for shortcomings in traditional illustration. It's important to realize we can overcome challenges by adopting alternative methods. Today's technological tools and methods provide numerous ways to effectively address personal skill gaps.


Labels and Writing

Due to frequent handwriting errors, I've abandoned handwritten labels entirely. Instead, I use automated printing for nearly every label type. Specifically, I rely on the online tool labels.entomo.pl, which simplifies this process enormously.

For writing scientific papers, rigorous peer review is crucial. Sitting down with colleagues who carefully proofread my work prevents mistakes. Embracing others' strengths and sharing your own skills are essential practices for success in science.

Specimen Organization

I organize collections according to current phylogenetic relationships rather than alphabetically or arbitrarily. For extensive collections, rather than relying on memory, I create detailed location maps for easy specimen retrieval. This structured organization greatly simplifies collection management.
